Ibadan, Nigeria – July 7, 2025 — The Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after marking his 90th birthday. His death has cast a pall of mourning over the ancient city of Ibadan and its traditional council.
Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne in July 2024 as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, succeeding Oba (Dr.) Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, who died in March 2024 at the age of 81.
He was formally presented with the staff of office by Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024, following his elevation through the ranks of the traditional chieftaincy system, most notably serving as the Balogun Olubadan before becoming monarch.
Despite his brief reign, Oba Olakulehin was widely respected for his commitment to fostering peace, unity, and cultural heritage in Ibadanland. His leadership was characterized by dignity and a deep sense of responsibility to his people.
The Olubadan’s death has triggered an outpouring of grief across the city, with residents and members of the Olubadan-in-Council expressing sorrow over the loss of a revered custodian of Ibadan’s rich traditions.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements and official tributes from the Oyo State Government and the Olubadan-in-Council are expected to be announced shortly.
