
Ijebu Ode, Nigeria —Oba Sikiru Kayọde Adetọna, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland, has passed away at the age of 91, marking the end of a historic 65-year reign. He ascended the throne in April 1960, shortly before Nigeria’s independence, and became one of the longest-reigning monarchs in Africa.
A UK-trained accountant turned royal, Oba Adetọna was known for modernizing traditional leadership, promoting education, and transforming the Ojude Oba festival into a global cultural event. He was widely respected for his wisdom, candor, and service to the Yoruba nation.
The Ogun State Government has declared a 7-day mourning period, with tributes pouring in from across Nigeria and beyond. Funeral arrangements are underway in accordance with royal customs.
