ABUJA — The Nigeria Police Force has identified and summoned a group of officers caught on camera extorting motorists, following widespread outrage over a viral video posted on social media.

The footage, which emerged on Monday, shows a police officer allegedly demanding ₦5,000 or five litres of fuel from drivers unable to present their Electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) documents. The clip sparked immediate condemnation from Nigerians, reigniting concerns about police corruption and abuse of power.

In response, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), describing the officers’ conduct as “utterly condemned.”

“This action is utterly condemned. The officers have been identified and summoned to Force Headquarters for necessary action,” Adejobi wrote.

“We will not tolerate any act of indiscipline or unprofessionalism. We will update the public on our decisions as soon as possible.”

The identities of the officers involved have not yet been disclosed, and it remains unclear whether they will face disciplinary proceedings, suspension, or dismissal.

This latest incident adds to growing scrutiny of the police’s handling of public trust and accountability in the wake of multiple cases of misconduct recorded in recent years. The Nigeria Police Force has pledged to act decisively and transparently in addressing the situation.

ABUJA — A former executive assistant to embattled former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has detailed in court how he personally delivered $400,000 in cash to his former boss in Lagos, raising fresh questions about alleged financial misconduct during Emefiele’s tenure.

Testifying before the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, the aide, Mr. John Adetola, recounted how he acted on instructions conveyed via WhatsApp from Mr. Eric Odoh, another personal assistant to Emefiele based in Abuja. According to Adetola, the message directed him to collect a cash parcel from Mr. John Ayoh, the former Director of Information Technology at the CBN.

“I received a WhatsApp message from Eric Odoh in 2018 asking me to go to Mr. John Ayoh’s residence in Lekki to pick up an envelope,” Adetola told the court. “I went there, received the cash—$400,000—and delivered it directly to Mr. Emefiele at the Lagos office.”

Adetola further testified that he had regular access to Emefiele and communicated with him through phone calls, emails, and in-person meetings. He also confirmed knowing members of the former governor’s family and identified Mr. Henry Omoile, the second defendant in the trial, as a resident of Emefiele’s private residence.

The prosecution submitted WhatsApp chat logs as evidence, corroborating Adetola’s claims. The documents were admitted by the court without objection.

Emefiele and Omoile are currently facing 26 counts bordering on abuse of office, corruption, and financial misconduct, involving alleged misappropriation of $4.5 billion and ₦2.8 billion.

The case, prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), continues to draw national attention. The court has adjourned further hearing to Tuesday 27, May 2025.

President Trump Delays EU Tariff Threat, Extends Trade Talks to July

Washington, D.C. – May 26, 2025 — In a move aimed at de-escalating transatlantic trade tensions, President Donald Trump has agreed to delay the implementation of a 50% tariff on European Union imports, extending the current trade negotiations deadline to July 9, 2025.

The announcement followed a phone conversation between President Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Describing the exchange as a “very nice call,” Trump praised von der Leyen’s renewed commitment to achieving a “fair and reciprocal” trade arrangement. The EU leader echoed that sentiment, emphasizing Brussels’ readiness to accelerate negotiations over the coming weeks.

Tariff Threat Temporarily Averted

The tariff, originally scheduled to take effect on June 1, had threatened to ignite a full-blown trade war between two of the world’s largest economic blocs. The Trump administration had cited longstanding trade imbalances, particularly in the automotive and agricultural sectors, as justification for the drastic measure.

In response to U.S. tariffs earlier this year—including a 25% levy on foreign-made cars and a 20% blanket tariff on EU goods—the European Union had prepared retaliatory tariffs. However, those countermeasures were suspended during a temporary 90-day negotiation period set to expire in early July.

Markets React Positively

News of the extension sent ripples through global financial markets. European stocks rallied sharply, the euro strengthened modestly, and oil prices climbed amid easing fears of an economic slowdown.

“This delay buys crucial time,” said Amélie Rousseau, a senior analyst at BNP Paribas. “But if both sides fail to make significant progress by July, markets could face renewed volatility.”

Political and Economic Stakes

The Trump administration has framed its trade posture as part of a broader “America First” economic strategy. While the president claims his tough stance has brought trading partners to the table, critics argue it risks isolating the U.S. and destabilizing global commerce.

EU officials are reportedly seeking concessions on steel and aluminum duties, as well as greater access to U.S. agricultural markets. Washington, meanwhile, is pressing for reductions in EU subsidies and improved terms for American tech firms.

Looking Ahead

With the new July 9 deadline looming, both parties face mounting pressure to strike a deal that will forestall a damaging escalation. Observers expect intensified diplomatic activity in the coming weeks, with additional bilateral meetings and working-level talks already underway.

“The clock is ticking,” von der Leyen said in a statement released Monday. “But I believe there is a path forward—if both sides show flexibility and goodwill.”

Whether that optimism translates into a tangible agreement remains to be seen.

The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a dramatic new turn, as former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has formally withdrawn from the party’s ongoing reconciliation process. Wike blames Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for what he calls “a betrayal of trust” and “alignment with the party’s national establishment.”

Wike, a central figure in the influential G-5 bloc of PDP governors, has reportedly severed political ties with Makinde, citing his alleged collaboration with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the PDP National Working Committee—an alliance Wike believes undercuts the bloc’s earlier stance against the party’s leadership.

“The game has changed,” a source close to Wike said. “Governor Makinde has made his choice, and it’s not with those of us who stood against injustice within the party.”

The fallout has also been linked to Makinde’s silence over the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, where Wike is embroiled in a bitter battle with his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Although the two met privately in Lagos earlier this month in what was seen as a last-ditch attempt to mend fences, sources confirm that no meaningful progress was achieved. The meeting reportedly focused on disputes over the South-South zonal leadership and the appointment of the party’s National Secretary—issues that remain unresolved.

Meanwhile, the PDP continues to grapple with broader internal fractures. The party is now effectively split between factions loyal to Atiku and Wike, leading to suspensions, court cases, and strategic deadlocks at both the national and state levels.

Political analysts warn that unless urgent and sincere reconciliation is achieved, the PDP’s prospects in the 2027 general elections may be severely undermined.

As one party insider put it, “If the PDP cannot fix its house now, it may be too late when the real campaign begins.”
